Substitute Information
How to Apply
*The Substitute Pool for the 2021-22 school year is open.
Complete and submit an online Substitute application - be sure to add the substitute job to your application. For directions on submitting the Substitute application, please follow the steps outlined in the
Substitute Application Instructions document.
Types of Substitutes
- Certified Substitute – substitute for classroom teachers - please note you do not have to be a subject area expert to substitute for a classroom teacher
- ***Effective 9/15/21 and for the remainder of the school year, district administration has waived the requirement of a Bachelor's degree to substitute in certified positions. Please see this Memo for more information.
- Must complete the online Certified Substitute Training to be eligible to substitute in certified positions.
- Classified Substitute – substitute for support positions (i.e. tutors, special education assistants, school support assistants, etc.)
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Nurse Substitute - Must have a valid RN License
- Health Tech Substitute - Must have a valid CPR and First Aid Certification
- Library Substitute - Must have a high school diploma or GED and complete the Library Substitute training process.
Application Review
- After your application has been submitted, the Substitute Office will review your application and qualifications.
- Applying as a substitute does not guarantee employment as a substitute.
- Be sure to include any volunteer experience in the application (ex: coaching, community service, etc.) and/or on a resume
- Please submit copies of your transcripts that show proof of degree or a copy of your diploma.
Selected Applicants
- If selected to become a substitute, you will be notified via email with additional instructions.
- The selected applicant will be required to complete an FBI Criminal Background Check. A fingerprint fee of $28.25 will be collected during the appointment. We accept cash, check, and most major credit cards.
- If you do not bring one of these forms of payment to your fingerprinting and onboarding appointment, we will need to reschedule the appointment for a future date.
- Teacher Training Class - selected certified substitute applicants will be required to complete our Certified Substitute Training course. Information about this training will be given during your onboarding appointment.
Pay Information
- Certified
- $95 per full day (assignments over 4 hours in duration)
- $47.50 per half day (assignments up to 4 hours in duration)
- Classified
- $85 per full day (assignments over 4 hours in duration)
- $42.50 per half day (assignments up to 4 hours in duration)
- Long-Term Pay - 10 consecutive days for the same employee
- Certified $125 full day or $62.50 half day
- Classified $105 full day or $52.50 half day
Substitutes are paid on the 15th of each month for all assignments worked the previous month.

- If you can no longer sub for the Boise School District, please fill out the Substitute Resignation Form to be removed from our active substitute list.
- Absence Management
- Access the Absence Management system to view substitute job opportunities.
- The Absence Management Mobile App is now available to Substitutes for free via your phone’s app store! Here are some important items to keep in mind when using the app:
- You will not have the ability to cancel a job from the app. You will need to continue using the web browser or phone calling system to cancel a job.
- You cannot create a non-work day through the app, this will have to be done through the Absence Management website.
- Only one type of sound setting is available for notifications.
- You can continue to also use MyApps, Jobulator, or your phone/computer's online web browser to fully access all Absence Management features.
